What does the book promise and does it deliver?
“The Dip” by Seth Godin is a tiny book that promises to teach the reader when to stick with something and when to quit. Every new venture, whether it’s a project, a career, or a hobby, starts out fun and exciting. But soon enough, you hit a “dip” – a tough period where things get really hard and progress seems to stall.
The book delivers on it’s promise, I think the examples he provides help to understand his idea.
Rating 4.5/5
What are your key takeaways?
My key takeaway from the book is to be strategic about quitting. Don’t just give up when things get tough; instead, evaluate whether the challenge is part of the process toward achieving something meaningful or if it’s a sign that you should redirect your efforts elsewhere. Knowing the difference can save you time and energy, helping you focus on pursuits that truly matter and have the potential for success.
Have you implemented anything from the book? If yes, what?
Yes, I’ve decided to remove a couple of projects from my list so I can solely focus on achieving my main goals.
Who is the book suitable for?
I would say the book is suitable for anyone, it’s a short book and fairly accessible to most. It could help people who are at a crossroads, but seeing as business owners and creators have to make so many decisions on whether to stick with something or move on, it would particularly help business owners.
Any other comments?
What I found really interesting is that it’s suggested that unless you are striving to be the very best at what you’re doing, it’s not worth your effort to
continue because that’s what customers are looking for. No one ever asks for a recommendation to an average restaurant or a mediocre hairdresser, they look for the best within the parameters they set (e.g., location or price).
Of course, not everyone can just quit something and move
onto something else though. If you have a dead-end job for example, this is the exact
thing Godin says you should quit – but what if you are the breadwinner for your
family or it’s the only job that fits around your caring requirements?
Regardless of the author’s apparent privilege in this particular matter (and what stopped my offering a full 5 stars), I did really enjoy the book and will keep it to reread again, seeing as it can be ploughed through in a matter of hours. I do love a tiny and very specific book.
